A Collaborative Journey of Hope and Remembrance

At Syéxw Chó:leqw Adventure Park near Hope, BC, Sq’ewá:lxw (Skawahlook) First Nation proudly presents “Lighting the Path: Our Stories of Resilience,” a collaborative project with Limbic Media. This immersive walkthrough installation honours the courage and strength of residential school survivors, offering an emotionally moving exploration of historical grief and pain, leading to a celebration of hope, resilience, and the vibrant spirit of Indigenous children thriving within their communities.

Through a careful integration of light and sound, “Lighting the Path” guides visitors on a journey of remembrance and healing. Evocative soundscapes weave compelling narratives, while dynamic lighting installations respond to the stories being told, creating an immersive atmosphere that invites reflection and introspection.

Limbic Media designed and custom-built certain sculptural elements, including their newest lanterns, to bring this mythology to life. Along with using cutting-edge Aurora lighting technology and developing immersive soundscapes, the Limbic Media team worked closely with Skawahlook First Nation to bring their vision of honouring the past, celebrating the present, and illuminating the path forward to fruition.

Transforming a sombre subject into a beautiful and educational experience posed its challenges, but through creativity and empathy, a space has been created for reflection, learning, and healing.

As mentioned in a Hope Standard article, “We are incredibly pleased to add this new attraction that tells the story of residential schools but also speaks to our resilience as Indigenous people and our ability to rebuild our culture and ways of living,” said Skawahlook Chief Maureen Chapman in the press release. “Education at every level is important for understanding different cultures and circumstances, and the more people who share information from Lighting the Path, the more who will connect with our story.”
