The Pulse of Morris Park: How Light Brought a Bronx Community Together

Overview

Morris Park Avenue runs through one of the Bronx’s most culturally diverse neighborhoods, a mosaic of histories shaped by early European settlers, post-war immigration, and more recent arrivals from the Middle East. Despite its vibrant mix of people, Morris Park remained largely residential. Many residents commuted to Manhattan, leaving the local streets quiet after dusk.

For Camelia, Executive Director of the Morris Park Business Improvement District (BID), the challenge was clear: how to foster a sense of place and nighttime vibrancy that would encourage residents to stay, connect, and enjoy their own neighborhood.

The Challenge

One of the BID’s two local parks had recently undergone a long-delayed renovation due to COVID-era supply chain issues. When it finally reopened, it served its basic purpose, but lacked a spark. The park needed something that would transform it into a gathering point and beacon for the community.

So when a grant for public lighting became available, Camelia saw her chance. She needed something bold, a project that would not just decorate the space, but redefine how it was experienced.

The Collaboration

That’s when she turned to Limbic Media.

Through deep conversations about community, inclusion, and activation, the team co-created a vision that went beyond traditional lighting: a dynamic, interactive art installation that would make the park pulse with life.

Using Aurora, the team installed a series of LED tubes along the park’s fence, a design that combined elegant simplicity with powerful storytelling. The installation, titled “The Pulse,” became the heartbeat of Morris Park.

The Impact

The results were immediate and profound.

The Pulse didn’t just illuminate the park, it illuminated the community. Parents began bringing their children for evening strolls. Families gathered to sit and talk under the glowing lights. Neighbors who had never spoken before shared a bench to watch the colors shift to passing sounds, broken cultural barriers and brought a greater sense of community to the area.

As Camelia put it:

“This is the best project I ever did. Actually, it’s the only project that never received any negative feedback.”

The installation earned public recognition, including an award mention, but its deeper success was in how it reinvigorated civic pride. It made the park a destination, a place where Morris Park’s diversity could be celebrated, not just observed.

Evolving the Story

To keep the experience fresh, the BID and Limbic Media collaborated again the following year, reimagining the same hardware into a new design, “The Stars,” which became even more beloved.

Camelia recalls one resident telling her,

“I can’t even imagine the park without it now.”

A Living Canvas

What makes the project truly special is how it continues to evolve. Using the Aurora App, Camelia curates light shows year-round, from Juneteenth and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to religious holidays and even the release of a Taylor Swift album.

The installation has become a living, breathing extension of the community — one that celebrates both its diversity and its shared identity.

Conclusion

The Morris Park installation exemplifies how Limbic Media’s technology turns light into language, a medium for connection, joy, and belonging.

What began as a small lighting project has become a cultural catalyst for the Bronx, proof that when art, technology, and community come together, even a simple park fence can become a beacon of unity.
