Lincoln Square BID — Reimagining a New York Tradition with Limbic Media

A Legacy of Celebration

For two decades, Lincoln Square BID animated one of Manhattan’s most iconic districts, nestled between the Lincoln Center and Central Park, with Winter’s Eve, a beloved annual festival. From 2008 to 2019, this event transformed the neighborhood each Winter into a bustling celebration: local restaurants lined the streets with open-air food markets, Grammy-winning musicians like Ronnie Spector and Mickey Dolenz filled the air with music, and thousands gathered to share the warmth of community.

But after the pandemic and shifting city directives, Winter’s Eve came to an end. For many, it felt like the curtain had closed on a defining era of the neighborhood’s cultural life. Yet in truth, it marked the beginning of a new chapter, one that called for fresh imagination.

A New Beginning Through Light

When Lincoln Square BID sought to rekindle the district’s sense of togetherness, they turned to Limbic Media, for its creative approach to technology and interactive lighting experiences that respond to sound and movement.

Through months of collaboration, brainstorming, and design refinement, a new idea took shape, Magical Lights, a modern celebration rooted in the same spirit of artistry and connection that defined Winter’s Eve.

The centerpiece: Dante Park, where eight towering London Plane trees were transformed into Singing Trees, their branches wrapped in shimmering, vine-like lights that danced in perfect harmony with music.

Reviving the Soul of the District

At first, the community was hesitant. Could this fill the void left by a legendary street festival?

It didn’t take long for the answer to shine through. The installation quickly became a hit, a beacon that re-energized the neighborhood and invited both residents and visitors to linger, listen, and reconnect.

Lincoln Square BID layered recordings from the Metropolitan Opera and Jazz at Lincoln Center through the installation, transforming Dante Park into a living, breathing concert of light and sound. The response was overwhelming. The activation earned “Best Holiday Activation in New York City”, and even executives from Lincoln Center praised it as “the BID’s best work to date.”

Creating a Timeless Experience

What made Magical Lights extraordinary was its lasting impact. Unlike a one-night festival, the installation became a season-long experience, one that brought people back to the park again and again. It turned ordinary evenings into moments of discovery, bridging the gap between art, technology, and everyday life.

The success led to an expansion into Richard Tucker Park, where more Singing Trees extended the glow across the district.

Lighting the Way Forward

With Limbic Media’s interactive technology, Lincoln Square BID didn’t just replace an old tradition, they reinvented it. The project honored the area’s refined, cultural identity while inviting new audiences to engage with it in unexpected ways.

What began as an experiment in creative placemaking has become a new tradition — one that celebrates connection, resilience, and the enduring power of light to bring people together
